Maybe Kitchener-Waterloo has more bicycle culture than we think?

On my way to pick up groceries from Bailey’s Local Foods my cycle-chic pastor shouted ‘hello’.  I looked over and on a very urban bike with racks on the front and back was Steve dressed in black dress shorts, a white short-sleeved shirt and a tie (by the way Steve was also wearing a bike helmet).

I shouted a comment about how dapper he was and that’s when I heard about some bike culture in K-W.  Steve was off to a wedding (not sure if he was officiating) where everyone was riding from the ceremony at Victoria Park to the reception. I wish I had a camera, Steve was looking very smart. And how cool would it be to see a wedding procession by a group of smart looking cyclists. I wish I could have seen the bride and groom drive away on a tandem with a bunch of tin cans tied to it.  Steve you’ll have to send us a few pictures.

There you have it – bike culture is very much alive in Kitchener-Waterloo! (This encounter could never have taken place if we had both been driving. Evidence how a life is richer without the steel cage.)

By the way, I have a very cool pastor :)

  1. I’ve heard of the odd wedding like that in Toronto, nice to hear K-W has them as well!

One time I was in Welland I spotted someone dressed as a priest locking his bike up at a mall :p

  2. That was my wedding! I’ve got to say being on a bicycle surrounded by friends with my husband at my side (on his own bicycle because if we rode a tandem who would get to steer?) was soo much better than riding in a limo. We got to see people’s faces as we rode past, changing from puzzlement to joy. People clapped and rang their bells, cheered and many gave us fist-pumps of congratulations. It was truly one of the best parts of the day. It was a literal manifestation of spreading our love and joy throughout the community. I highly recommend a bike procession to all couples!

    1. Hi Angela,
Thanks for commenting:) I’m planning another simple post, cause I think the story around your wedding procession is like the coolest ever and needs to be told :)

Ciaran’s letting me use his fb photo and directed me towards Jake’s pics (who I have yet to contact). Hopefully I’ll have another post in a couple of days (if that’s alright with you?).
